Education corner

"In the early 20th-century Plaza San Martin has French-influenced architecture and a bronze questrian statue of liberator General San Martin erected in 1921. But get closer and you'll also discover the overlooked statue of Madre Patria, the symbolic mother of Peru. Commissioned in Spain under instruction to give the good lady a crown of flames nobody thought to iron out the double meaning of the work flame in Spanish (llama), and the hapless craftsmen duly placed a delightful little llama on her head."
